Ylang Ylang is een grote boom afkomstig uit landen in het Verre Oosten, zoals Maleisië, de Filippijnen en Indonesië. De gele bloemen zijn sterk geurig en hebben lange, hangende bloemblaadjes. De etherische olie die ervan wordt gemaakt, is in overvloed verkrijgbaar en daarom het minst duur, maar is vanwege zijn geur zeer geliefd in de parfum- en cosmetica-industrie en wordt tegenwoordig ook in de voedingsindustrie gebruikt.
Volgens de wetenschap is Ylang Ylang Biologische Essentiële Olie een mentaal stimulerend middel. Daarentegen beschouwt de wereld van de aromatherapie deze olie als een van de beste om lichaam en geest te ontspannen. Alleen al het ruiken ervan zou de bloeddruk helpen verlagen. Een bad nemen met de olie of het gebruiken in een massageolie versterkt op natuurlijke wijze de ontspanningservaring. Het wordt gebruikt om stress, depressie, shock of angst te verlichten. Bij gebruik als haartonicum zou het de olieproductie in evenwicht moeten brengen. Wees echter gewaarschuwd: hoge concentraties ylang ylang kunnen hoofdpijn of misselijkheid veroorzaken.
Ylang Ylang betekent de bloem der bloemen in het Maleis, en werd traditioneel gezien als een afrodisiacum en een ontspannende geur, dus werden de bloemen van deze boom uitgestrooid op het huwelijksbed van een pas getrouwd stel in Indonesië. Moslimvrouwen verbrandden deze olie om hun harems, het deel van het paleis dat gereserveerd was voor vrouwen, te laten ruiken. In China werd de geur gebruikt om de gewaden van de mandarijn te zuiveren. Essentiële olie van Ylang Ylang wordt al lange tijd geassocieerd met parfums en ontspanning.
